This one can be tough for some English teachers abroad to implement–especially newer ones who want to be the students’ friend and create an environment where everyone feels relaxed and happy and entertained. As I’ve said numerous times before, my ESL classroom is NOT a place to feel relaxed and sleepy. Students should be on the edge of their seats learning English, paying attention, and feeling at least a little bit of stress. Muscles grow under constant tension and heavy weights. No one gets stronger going to the gym and lounging on the bench press machine sipping lemonade. Treat your classroom abroad the same way–a laboratory for creating stronger, more enriched minds–not a lounge.
